The United Alternative Government and the Linda Mwananchi Movement have condemned what they described as rising cases of political violence and intimidation across Kenya ahead of the 2027 General Election.
The two groups made the remarks during a joint press briefing in Nairobi, where they raised concerns over attacks targeting opposition leaders, journalists and members of the public.
The leaders said the incidents pointed to what they described as a growing pattern of organised political violence as political activity intensifies ahead of the elections.
They called for independent and transparent investigations into reported cases and urged authorities to hold those found responsible accountable.
Coalition calls for vigilance
The groups warned that continued political intolerance could undermine democracy, national cohesion and the rule of law.
They called on Kenyans, religious leaders, civil society organisations, the media, and the international community to remain vigilant against violence and intimidation.
The two groups also urged citizens to oppose attempts to restrict democratic freedoms as political parties and movements prepare for the 2027 polls.
They called on the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), security agencies and other constitutional institutions to carry out their mandates impartially.
The leaders said the institutions should work to ensure the country heads towards free, fair, and peaceful elections.
People’s Forum announced
As part of their response, the United Alternative Government and Linda Mwananchi Movement announced plans to establish a People’s Forum for Electoral Preparedness.
The forum is expected to bring together different stakeholders to promote electoral integrity and accountability ahead of the 2027 General Election.
The groups said the initiative would provide a platform for discussions on preparations for the elections and the protection of democratic processes.
They reaffirmed their commitment to peaceful political engagement and said the 2027 election should be determined through ideas, policies, ballots and the will of voters.
The leaders maintained that political competition should not be settled through violence, intimidation or fear as Kenya moves towards the next General Election.
