COTU SG Francis Atwoli warns those leaking govt secrets to Rigathi Gachagua

Central Organisation of Trade Unions (COTU) Secretary General Francis Atwoli has warned security officers and government officials against leaking confidential government information to former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, saying they risk disciplinary action, including dismissal.

Speaking at St. Francis Mawego Catholic Church Parish in Karachuonyo Constituency, Atwoli claimed some officers were supplying sensitive information to the Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) leader, whom he accused of misusing intelligence reports.

He said the disclosure of confidential security information could expose officers and interfere with security operations, urging those involved to stop sharing classified information.

Atwoli cautions officers over intelligence leaks

Atwoli said government officers should refrain from providing Gachagua with confidential information, arguing that the former deputy president was using it in ways that could put security personnel at risk.

“Don’t give Gachagua information because he misuses that information, and he will cause people’s children in the police force, our young people, to be fired. We usually get information from the police, but we take it where it is supposed to go,” Atwoli said.

He added that although he occasionally receives information from police officers, he does not publicise it but instead channels it through the appropriate offices.

“You don’t announce at a meeting, ‘Oh, I’ve been told by a certain police officer that a certain thing will happen.’ You are endangering the police officers, Gachagua. Stop that foolishness of yours,” he said.

Criticises Linda Mwananchi movement

Atwoli also took aim at the Linda Mwananchi team led by Nairobi Senator Edwin Sifuna, claiming its leaders lacked the experience needed to lead the country.

He accused the group of misleading Kenyans by claiming to champion the ideals advanced by former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.

The COTU boss further alleged that Sifuna and his allies were being financed by an unnamed individual to create divisions within the Luhya community.

Accompanied by KUPPET Secretary General Akello Misori, Atwoli said the Luhya community would hold the Bukhungu Three meeting in December, where political leaders are expected to make declarations ahead of the 2027 General Election.

His remarks come as political leaders continue to intensify campaigns and realignments ahead of the next polls.
