Police recover 470 stolen animals in Marsabit as manhunt for bandits intensifies

Police and other security agencies have recovered 470 stolen goats and sheep in Marsabit County after pursuing armed bandits involved in a livestock raid in Loiyangalani Sub-County.

The National Police Service (NPS) said the recovery was made on Sunday, August 9, during a multi-agency operation launched after the animals were stolen from the Galgumbe area.

According to the police statement on Monday, August 10, 2026, security officers pursued the attackers as they fled with the livestock, forcing them to abandon the animals and escape into the rugged Ruai Hills.

“The multi-agency team closely pursued the fleeing attackers, forcing them to abandon the 470 goats and sheep and escape into the rugged Ruai Hills,” the NPS said in a statement.

How police tracked the suspects

Police said security operations remain active in the area as officers continue tracking the suspects, work to restore calm, and seek to recover any remaining stolen animals.

The recovery comes amid continued efforts by security agencies to contain livestock theft and banditry in parts of northern Kenya, where raids often trigger tension among communities and disrupt livelihoods that depend heavily on pastoralism.

“The National Police Service commends the multi-agency security team for its coordination and quick response, which led to the successful recovery of the goats and sheep,” the statement said.

Police urged residents to cooperate with security agencies by reporting criminal or suspicious activities through the nearest police station or the toll-free emergency numbers 999 and 911.

The service also asked members of the public to share information through the #FichuaKwaDCI hotline on 0800 722 203 or via WhatsApp on 0709 570 000, noting that information can be provided anonymously.
