Chelsea will welcome Manchester United to Stamford Bridge on Saturday afternoon, October 31, 2026 for a Premier League encounter between two sides struggling to find consistency.

The 12.30pm kick-off presents an important opportunity for both managers, Xabi Alonso and Michael Carrick, to halt worrying runs of results and ease the pressure surrounding their positions.

Both teams head into the contest after suffering consecutive defeats in all competitions, although the situation at Old Trafford is considerably more alarming.

Match preview

Michael Carrick has received another opportunity to revive Manchester United’s struggling campaign despite mounting frustration among supporters over the club’s performances.

The former midfielder appeared to be on his way out following United’s embarrassing 3-0 home defeat against Bournemouth last weekend. The result was particularly damaging, considering it was the third time in four seasons that Bournemouth had beaten the Red Devils by that scoreline at Old Trafford.

United’s problems have extended beyond that disappointing performance. They have gone eight matches without a victory in all competitions, including six consecutive Premier League fixtures without collecting maximum points.

The poor sequence has left Manchester United occupying 16th position in the league standings, just a point clear of the relegation places.

Carrick has nevertheless been given additional time to address the situation, with the club hoping he can arrest their alarming decline.

However, questions about United’s struggles go beyond the manager, with the club’s ownership and senior leadership also facing criticism over their inability to restore the team to its former standards.

The immediate challenge for Carrick is to secure Manchester United’s first away victory of the campaign. Their seven-point return from eight league matches represents their poorest beginning to a top-flight season since the 1986-87 campaign.

Chelsea, meanwhile, have not been enjoying a particularly comfortable period despite sitting 11 places above United and boasting a six-point advantage over their opponents.

Alonso’s men have lost their last two matches, beginning with a disappointing 2-0 defeat against Tottenham Hotspur at Stamford Bridge before being eliminated from the EFL Cup by Liverpool.

Chelsea failed to recover from their disappointing performance against Spurs, while their trip to Anfield ended in another setback after Liverpool prevailed in a penalty shootout in the fourth round of the competition.

Their impressive victories over Bournemouth and Everton, during which they scored seven goals collectively, now appear to have provided only temporary encouragement.

Chelsea have subsequently slipped out of the Premier League’s top four and continue to struggle defensively.

They have conceded 15 goals in the league this season, with only Crystal Palace and Ipswich Town allowing more among the current top 10 sides. Their defensive record at Stamford Bridge is equally concerning, having shipped an average of two goals per home league fixture.

There is, however, a historical advantage for Manchester United to draw confidence from.

The Red Devils completed a league double over Chelsea during the 2025-26 season and have lost only three of their previous 19 meetings against the Blues in all competitions.

Team news

Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes is expected to return to the starting team after being left out against Bournemouth.

His omission from the previous match attracted considerable attention, particularly after reports emerged that he had questioned Carrick’s tactical approach during the team’s visit to Como.

Carrick subsequently explained that the decision was based entirely on footballing considerations. The manager and his captain have reportedly discussed their differences, paving the way for Fernandes to return.

Carrick has also confirmed that the Portuguese midfielder remains “fully committed” to Manchester United.

Kobbie Mainoo has resumed training and could also be available, although uncertainty remains over Marcus Rashford’s fitness.

United will still be without Luke Shaw, Benjamin Sesko, Manuel Ugarte and Patrick Dorgu. Shaw’s problem has not been specified, while Sesko is nursing a shin injury, Ugarte has a knee issue and Dorgu is recovering from a thigh problem.

Chelsea also have several fitness concerns ahead of the encounter.

Maxence Lacroix, Moises Caicedo and Malo Gusto all experienced problems during the defeat against Liverpool. Although Caicedo and Gusto are expected to recover in time, Lacroix’s hamstring injury is likely to keep him out.

He joins Reece James, Joao Pedro, Emiliano Martinez and Jamie Gittens on the injury list.

James is recovering from a knee problem, Pedro has a thigh injury, Martinez is dealing with a jaw issue and Gittens has an ankle problem.

Pep Chavarria could be available again after recovering from an unspecified injury, while Cole Palmer is eligible to return after completing his suspension following his dismissal against Tottenham.

Wesley Fofana is expected to replace Lacroix in defence despite his disappointing outing against Liverpool, where he conceded a penalty before missing his attempt during the shootout.

Palmer could also be given a central attacking role as a false nine following Danny Welbeck’s unconvincing performance in midweek.

Chelsea predicted starting XI:

Penders; Acheampong, Fofana, Colwill, Hato; Henderson, Lavia, Caicedo; Neto, Palmer, Rogers.

Manchester United predicted starting XI:

Lammens; Mazraoui, Maguire, Martinez, Dalot; Santos, Baleba; Mbeumo, Fernandes, Mount; Cunha.

Prediction: Chelsea 2-1 Manchester United

Manchester United are likely to create attacking opportunities against a Chelsea defence that has been weakened by injuries.

However, Carrick’s side have their own defensive shortcomings, and their prolonged inability to secure victories makes it difficult to back them to produce a positive result in London.

Chelsea have also endured a difficult spell, but home advantage and the expected return of Palmer could prove decisive.

The Blues are therefore tipped to claim a narrow victory, leaving Manchester United’s disappointing run of results to continue.
