Democratic Congresswoman Ilhan Omar has secured a fifth term representing Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District after defeating Republican challenger John Nagel in the November 3 midterm elections, delivering another decisive victory despite years of political attacks from President Donald Trump.
The victory, projected by CBS News, reinforces Omar’s political standing in one of the most reliably Democratic congressional districts in the United States and marks another setback for efforts to unseat the progressive lawmaker, who has frequently clashed with Trump over immigration, foreign policy and his administration’s treatment of political opponents.
According to unofficial results published by the Minnesota Secretary of State, Omar received 262,702 votes, representing 76.48% of the total. Nagel secured 55,765 votes, or 16.23%, while independent candidate DeVelle L. Jackson received 24,110 votes, representing 7.02%.
All 217 precincts in the district had reported their results in the figures available on Wednesday morning.
Trump’s attacks become a major backdrop to Omar’s reelection
Omar‘s victory comes against the backdrop of an increasingly bitter political confrontation with President Trump, who has repeatedly criticized the Minnesota congresswoman and targeted her in his public remarks about immigration and American politics.
The president previously suggested that Omar should return to Somalia, the country from which she fled as a refugee, after arriving in the United States. He has also publicly insulted her and called for investigations into her activities.
The latest tensions intensified in October when federal Homeland Security investigators raided Omar’s Washington, D.C., residence as part of an apparent investigation involving immigration documentation submitted on her behalf by her late father when she was a child.

Omar condemned the operation, describing it as an abuse of power and accusing the administration of weaponizing federal law enforcement against political opponents.
The congresswoman has maintained that the investigation represents an attempt to intimidate her and undermine her ability to challenge the administration.
Her reelection now gives her another congressional mandate as the political confrontation with Trump continues.
Omar calls victory a rejection of fear and division
Following her victory, Omar issued a statement thanking Minnesota voters and describing the result as a rejection of hatred, intimidation and political division.
She credited grassroots organizing, community solidarity and local activism for helping secure her reelection.
“Our year began with Minnesota showing the world what we are made of during Operation Metro Surge. We showed what happens when neighbors stand up for one another and communities refuse to look away,” Omar said.
She described the election outcome as a mandate for progressive policies, including Medicare for All, universal school meals, climate action, student debt cancellation and an end to what she called endless wars.
Omar also called for accountability over Trump’s conduct in office, accusing his administration of corruption and the misuse of federal power.
Addressing the president directly, she declared that she would not be intimidated or silenced.
“But Minnesota elected me to be their voice in Washington. I will not be intimidated. I will not back down. And I will never let Donald Trump silence me,” she said.
Her statement also highlighted her campaign’s emphasis on community organizing, including support for food shelves, mutual aid initiatives and political participation among East African communities across Minnesota.

Who is John Nagel, the Republican challenger?
Nagel, a former Minnesota State Patrol trooper, challenged Omar on a platform emphasising government accountability, public safety and economic concerns.
His campaign focused on strengthening fraud prevention measures, protecting Medicare and Medicaid, reforming the Affordable Care Act and improving border security through technology and infrastructure.
He also advocated maintaining a strong national defence.
However, those priorities were not enough to overcome Omar’s substantial electoral advantage in Minnesota’s 5th Congressional District.
The district includes Minneapolis and several surrounding communities and is widely regarded as one of the strongest Democratic electoral strongholds in the country.
Omar first entered Congress in 2019 and has remained a prominent figure in the Democratic Party, particularly among progressive lawmakers.
What Omar’s fifth term means for Trump and American politics
Omar’s reelection carries significance beyond Minnesota’s congressional representation.
As one of Trump’s most outspoken congressional critics, she has become a prominent figure in the national debate over immigration, federal law enforcement, foreign policy and the future of progressive politics.
Her latest victory demonstrates that the controversy surrounding her political relationship with Trump did not translate into an electoral defeat in her Minneapolis-based district.
Instead, she returns to Washington with another electoral mandate and a renewed commitment to challenge the president’s policies.
For Trump, Omar’s reelection means that one of his most vocal congressional critics will remain in the House of Representatives for another term.
For Minnesota voters, the result confirms continuity in the state’s 5th Congressional District, where Omar has built a strong electoral base since first winning the seat in 2018.
As the new congressional term approaches, attention will turn to how Omar uses her renewed position in Washington to advance her legislative priorities and confront an administration she has repeatedly accused of targeting her politically.
