Portuguese football legend Cristiano Ronaldo has announced his retirement from international football, bringing an end to a 23-year career with the national team that saw him become the world’s leading men’s international goalscorer.

The 41-year-old made the announcement on Thursday, November 5, 2026, through a social media message in which he declared his enduring connection to Portugal.

“Portugal will always be in me,” Ronaldo wrote.

The Al-Nassr forward, who will hand back Portugal’s iconic number 7 shirt after the November international break, leaves the national team with 146 goals in 234 appearances.

Ronaldo holds the all-time records for both international appearances and goals in men’s football.

His departure closes one of the longest and most decorated international careers in modern football, having represented Portugal since making his senior debut in 2003.

Ronaldo reflects on 23-year journey

In his farewell message, Ronaldo reflected on the sacrifices, achievements and experiences that defined his time representing Portugal.

“Today I finish my walk on the pitch with the national team. I leave with my head held high, with pride in the path I took, and with the awareness that I gave everything I had for Portugal.

“The goals pass, the cups are in museums, the records end up being beaten. But there is something that time can never erase, the place we occupy in people’s hearts.

“I spent my life working to be the best player in the world. Today I realise that the greatest victory was to have deserved to represent the best country in the world.”

The forward also thanked his teammates, coaches, family and Portuguese supporters across the world for standing with him throughout his international career.

“Thank you for these 23 years. Thank you for having believed in me. Portugal will always be in me. Forever.”

Euro 2016 remains career highlight

Ronaldo’s international career was defined by major achievements, most notably captaining Portugal to its first European Championship title at Euro 2016 in France.

Portugal defeated hosts France 1-0 after extra time in the final, with Eder scoring the decisive goal after Ronaldo had been forced off injured in the first half.

He also helped Portugal win the UEFA Nations League in 2019 and 2025, adding to his legacy as one of the country’s most influential footballers.

His international records include 146 goals and 234 appearances, figures that place him ahead of other men’s players in the global rankings.

Although his international career is coming to a close, Ronaldo’s farewell leaves behind a legacy built on goals, trophies, leadership and more than two decades of service to Portugal.
