Jamie Carragher has criticised the reported leak of Manchester United’s team news ahead of their UEFA Champions League clash against Atletico Madrid on Tuesday, October 13, 2026, warning that the situation could undermine the club’s efforts to build a winning culture.

The former Liverpool defender questioned how details of Michael Carrick’s expected starting XI and tactical plans had emerged before the official announcement, arguing that sensitive information should remain within the dressing room.

Carragher recalled Manchester United’s previous struggles with team news leaks, noting that former head coach Ruben Amorim had made efforts to keep the club’s preparations confidential.

The situation surrounding the leaked team news came shortly before Michael Carrick’s men suffered their first defeat in the competition by going 2-0 down to the hosts in Madrid, piling more pressure on Carrick to turn things around at Old Trafford.

“I remember a few years ago, this was exactly the kind of culture Manchester United were trying to get rid of. Amorim fought hard to keep team news confidential, yet here we are, hours before the club officially announces the starting XI, and fans already have an idea of who’s starting and where everyone is playing,” Carragher said.

He added that the club must establish accountability if it wants to prevent similar incidents from happening in the future.

“A dressing room should be a place where tactical information stays inside the dressing room,” he added.

Carragher defends Bruno Fernandes

Beyond the confidentiality concerns, Carragher also weighed in on reports suggesting that Bruno Fernandes could be deployed on the right wing against Atletico Madrid.

The former defender dismissed calls for the Portugal international to be dropped following two difficult performances, insisting that Manchester United should not rush to sideline one of their most influential players.

“Bruno is a natural number 10. He can operate from the right, but that doesn’t mean you’re getting the best out of him there. You want him receiving the ball between the lines, dictating attacks and creating chances, not constantly having to adjust to a position that limits his influence,” he said.

Carragher believes Fernandes is most effective when operating centrally, where he can influence attacking moves, create opportunities and dictate the tempo of play.

He argued that playing the midfielder out wide could limit his influence, although the decision ultimately rests with Carrick and his tactical assessment of the opposition.

Midfield balance could prove crucial

Carragher also highlighted the potential tactical implications of Manchester United’s selection in the attacking midfield position.

He suggested that Joshua Zirkzee could provide an option in the central role, while selecting Youri Tielemans as the number 10 would present a different challenge for the team’s midfield structure.

According to Carragher, such a decision could increase the defensive workload of Carlos Baleba, who would need to cover more ground, protect spaces and make recovery runs to maintain the team’s balance.

He pointed to Tielemans’ relative lack of recovery pace as a factor that could become significant against an Atletico Madrid side known for testing opponents tactically.

The midfield combination will therefore be an important consideration for Carrick as he prepares his side for the European encounter.

Carrick urged to investigate leak

Despite the tactical questions surrounding the reported line-up, Carragher believes identifying the source of the leak should be among Carrick’s immediate priorities.

He suggested that the United manager could consider adjusting certain aspects of his plans if the opposition had gained advance knowledge of his intended formation and personnel.

“If I’m Carrick and I discover that my starting XI and tactical setup have been leaked, I’m seriously considering whether to change certain details. You don’t want Atlético knowing exactly what you’re planning before the game even begins,” Carragher said.

However, he does not expect Carrick to abandon his preparations entirely because of the reports.

Carragher believes the manager is likely to trust the work done in training and rely on his players to carry out their responsibilities, rather than make sweeping changes in response to the leak.

He maintained that the bigger concern is the potential damage to Manchester United’s internal discipline and the message the club sends if those responsible are not held accountable.

“But Manchester United need to understand something: you cannot build a winning culture when the opposition might know your plans before your own supporters see the official lineup,” he said.

“The biggest mistake isn’t necessarily leaking the team. It’s allowing the people responsible to believe there will be no consequences.”

Carragher’s remarks place the spotlight on Manchester United’s internal operations ahead of a crucial European fixture, with questions over team selection, tactical balance and dressing-room confidentiality adding to the build-up to the Atletico Madrid clash.
