Former Kiambu Governor Ferdinand Waititu has been sentenced to a total of 13 years in prison or ordered to pay Ksh21 million in fines over three money-laundering counts in the Ksh588 million Kiambu County corruption case.

Milimani High Court Judge Harrison Barasa delivered the sentences on Monday, November 2, 2026, imposing five years’ imprisonment on Count 10, four years on Count 11 and another four years on Count 12.

The court also imposed fines totalling Ksh21 million, with imprisonment as the alternative punishment for failure to pay.

“Having considered the mitigation tendered by the accused persons, the prosecution’s submissions, the nature and the gravity of the offenses, and the applicable statutory provisions, I hereby sentence the accused persons as follows. On count 10, Ferdinand Waititu is fined Ksh10 million in default, imprisonment of 5 years,” In sentencing Waititu on Count 10, Justice Barasa said.

Waititu’s new sentence to run concurrently

Despite the 13-year sentence, Waititu will not serve an additional 13 years on top of the prison term he is already serving.

The court directed that the latest sentences run concurrently with the 12-year sentence imposed on him in February 2025 in a separate graft case.

Justice Barasa said the court would follow the directions issued in an earlier ruling on October 14, 2026, regarding how the sentences should run.

“The sentence imposed here in the High Court had already given directions on how they will run, therefore they will run as directed by the High Court in its rulling on October 14, 2026,” the judge said.

In paragraph 317 of the judgment, Justice Rose Ougo had directed that the sentences on the three money-laundering counts run concurrently with those previously imposed under the Anti-Corruption and Economic Crimes Act.

The latest ruling therefore adds financial penalties and further sentences to Waititu’s convictions, but does not extend his existing prison term by another 13 years.

Waititu’s wife also fined

Waititu’s wife, Susan Wangari, was also handed penalties over the three money-laundering counts.

The court fined her Ksh12 million on Count 10. On Count 11, she received a two-year prison sentence or an alternative fine of Ksh2 million. She was further fined Ksh8 million on Count 12.

The penalties amount to Ksh22 million in fines across the three counts, subject to the alternative imprisonment term imposed on Count 11.

The sentences followed the court proceedings in the Ksh588 million graft case involving funds allegedly siphoned from Kiambu County during Waititu’s tenure as governor.
