A medical doctor who was allegedly abducted by armed men in Juja and held for a Sh3 million ransom has been rescued following a police operation in Athi River, with one suspect arrested and two others escaping during the dramatic interception.
In a statement released on Thursday, August 6, 2026, the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) said officers from Athi River Police Station, working together with members of the public, successfully rescued the victim, identified as Emmanuel Kerich.
According to the DCI, Kerich was abducted while spending time with friends at Juja City Mall.
Abduction at Juja Mall
“The victim, Emmanuel Kerich, was reportedly accosted while in the company of friends at Juja City Mall by three men who handcuffed him before forcing him into a Subaru Forester, registration number KBK 895W,” the agency said.
Detectives revealed that preliminary investigations uncovered what appeared to be an attempt by the suspects to disguise the vehicle used in the crime.

“Preliminary investigations established that the vehicle’s side mirrors bore a different registration identity, KDQ 640F, in what officers believe was an attempt to conceal the vehicle’s identity during the commission of the crime,” the DCI stated.
Interception in Athi River
Investigators further said the abductors subjected the doctor to torture while demanding a ransom of Sh3 million for his release.
“The suspects then drove the victim through several locations, torturing him and demanding the ransom before proceeding towards Athi River,” the statement added.
The breakthrough came after police received intelligence on the suspects’ movements.
According to the DCI, officers, aided by members of the public, tracked the vehicle and intercepted it along the Mavemba–Mugoya Road in Athi River.
“Acting on intelligence and with the assistance of members of the public, police officers trailed and intercepted the vehicle along the Mavemba–Mugoya Road in Athi River,” the agency said.
During the operation, two suspects managed to flee, while a third was cornered by members of the public.
“During the ensuing confrontation, two suspects managed to escape, while one suspect was cornered by members of the public and subjected to mob injustice before officers intervened, rescued him and rushed him to hospital, where he remains under police guard,” the DCI said.
The victim was rescued safely during the operation.
Police also recovered a pair of handcuffs believed to have been used during the abduction and impounded the Subaru Forester as an exhibit in the investigation.
Meanwhile, detectives have launched a manhunt for the two suspects who remain at large.
