Nairobi Water shutdown: Residents in Mwiki, Kasarani, Ruai, Kayole, Roysambu and several other parts of Nairobi will experience a water supply interruption from Thursday, November 5, to Friday, November 6, 2026.

The Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company (NCWSC) has announced a planned water supply interruption in several parts of Nairobi following a scheduled shutdown of the Karimenu Transmission Pipeline.

In a public notice issued to customers on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, the water utility said the shutdown will be undertaken by the Athi Water Works Development Agency (AWWDA) to facilitate critical tie-in works on the transmission pipeline.

The interruption will begin at 3:00 am on Thursday, November 5, 2026, and end at 8:00 am on Friday, November 6, 2026, lasting approximately 29 hours.

Nairobi estates to experience water shortage

According to the notice, the planned Nairobi Water shutdown will affect several residential estates and neighbourhoods across the city.

The affected areas include Kasarani, Mwiki, Clay City, Ruai, Njiru and surrounding neighbourhoods.

Other areas expected to experience water shortages include Roysambu, Zimmerman, Kahawa Barracks and Kenyatta University (KU) and their environs.

The utility has also listed the entire Kayole area, Komarock, Soweto and Matopeni among the neighbourhoods that will be affected by the planned interruption.

Residents, households, businesses and institutions in these areas have been advised to prepare for the temporary disruption by making alternative water arrangements ahead of the shutdown.

Nairobi Water issues advisory to residents

Nairobi City Water and Sewerage Company has urged customers in the affected neighbourhoods to conserve the water currently available to them before the interruption begins.

In its notice, the company said: “We regret the inconvenience caused to our customers and urge them to use available water sparingly as we work towards supply restoration.”

The company said the interruption is necessary to allow AWWDA to undertake critical infrastructure connection works on the Karimenu Transmission Pipeline.

The works are expected to support water transmission infrastructure, although the notice did not provide further technical details about the project or specify when normal supply will be fully restored beyond the scheduled shutdown period.
