Coventry City manager Frank Lampard is delighted as his side moved out of the Premier League relegation places after recording a commanding 4-1 victory over Newcastle United at the CBS Arena.
The commanding victory also saw Lampard’s charges register their first home win of the season.
Frank Lampard’s men secured consecutive league victories through goals from Jack Rudoni, Sidiki Cherif, Ellis Simms and Stephen Mfuni, while Newcastle suffered their second successive 4-1 defeat on the road.
Newcastle briefly threatened to fight their way back into the contest after Sven Botman scored a spectacular long-range goal in the 70th minute. However, substitute Simms restored Coventry’s two-goal advantage before Mfuni completed the rout, becoming the club’s youngest-ever Premier League goalscorer.
The hosts made an ideal start when goalkeeper Lukas Hornicek brought down summer recruit Cherif inside the penalty area. Rudoni converted the resulting spot-kick in the sixth minute to give Coventry an early lead.
Newcastle responded by creating several promising opportunities but failed to make them count. Matias Fernandez-Pardo was particularly wasteful, missing two clear chances, including an effort that Bobby Thomas cleared off the line after the forward had rounded the goalkeeper.
Coventry punished their opponents’ failure to convert their chances shortly after the interval. Cherif, 19, produced a powerful low finish from outside the penalty area in the 48th minute to register his first goal for the club and double the home side’s advantage.
The young forward had an opportunity to add another seven minutes later but sent his close-range effort wide following a defensive error by Malick Thiaw.
Newcastle eventually found a way through in the 70th minute when Botman unleashed a superb strike from distance, giving the visitors renewed hope of salvaging a result.
Their optimism was short-lived, however, as Simms came off the bench and scored with his first touch in the 81st minute. His effort took a deflection on its way into the net, restoring Coventry’s two-goal cushion.
Mfuni then put the result beyond doubt in the 86th minute. The 18-year-old, who joined Coventry on loan from Manchester City during the summer, found the net for the first time at senior level to cap an outstanding performance by the hosts.
The result marked a significant milestone for Coventry, who claimed their first Premier League home victory in 25 years and scored their first league goals at home this season.
Newcastle have now lost their last two away matches by identical 4-1 scorelines, leaving Jaissle with questions to address ahead of their next fixture.
Lampard praises Coventry’s fighting spirit
Lampard was delighted with his team’s display, highlighting the energy, determination and belief that helped them secure an emphatic victory.

“We played like the team we want to be here. There’s so much spirit and energy. We know we’re going to have to suffer at times in games; we have to understand what the level is.
“But the work ethic from the team, the belief, then you get what you deserve, which is great finishes. We haven’t had that rub of the green, which might have helped us nick a few more points.
“As a complete performance, we’ve got to keep our feet on the ground because it’s only one game and we need 30 more of those. But it’s a great feeling for the players.”
Jaissle apologises after Newcastle defeat
The Newcastle manager expressed his disappointment with the performance and apologised to the supporters who travelled to watch the team.
“We’re frustrated. It’s a feeling you don’t want to have on a Monday evening after a match where you should win.
“We can only apologise to the fans who came here; they deserve a different result.
“We need to analyse it, clearly. There were bits that were good, but in both boxes, to defend our own goal, we need to improve and also score goals. The opportunities were there, but the desire and hunger to finish the attacks was missing.
“We need to improve on the things we can control, and that’s a lot right now.”
Jaissle acknowledged that his side must become more effective in both penalty areas, particularly after failing to take advantage of the opportunities they created against Coventry.
Coventry will attempt to extend their winning run to three matches when they travel to face Tottenham next Monday, while Newcastle will look to respond when they host Aston Villa on Saturday.
