Manchester City could be hit with two separate points deductions, with the potential punishment threatening to send the club out of the Premier League following their financial regulations case.

The reigning English football giants are appealing an independent panel’s decision that found them guilty of 114 alleged financial rule breaches last month. The charges relate to a nine-year period between 2009 and 2018.

The Premier League accused City of overstating their revenue through sponsorship agreements it considered illegitimate. However, the club have repeatedly rejected the allegations and maintain that they did nothing wrong.

City’s appeal means a final decision on the case remains pending, leaving uncertainty over the consequences they could face if the original verdict is upheld.

According to a report by the Daily Mail, people familiar with the proceedings believe City could receive a substantial points deduction that would make relegation to the Championship almost inevitable. A significant financial penalty is also reportedly among the possible sanctions.

The report further suggests that the club could face another points deduction after dropping into the second division, potentially forcing them to remain there for an additional season.

Although the English Football League (EFL) would not automatically be required to apply such a sanction to one of its clubs, sources reportedly believe the organisation would be likely to follow through with the punishment.

Potential consequences facing Manchester City

Other potential consequences have also been discussed, including a transfer ban and the possibility of removing titles City won during the period under investigation. However, the precise nature of any disciplinary action remains uncertain.

No punishment is expected to take effect before the appeal process concludes. Under the Premier League’s regulations, a final decision is anticipated in early 2027, subject to the applicable deadlines.

Former Arsenal defender and football pundit Martin Keown has also spoken about the uncertainty surrounding the case, revealing that he has received differing accounts of the punishment City could face if their appeal fails.

For now, the club’s immediate future remains dependent on the outcome of the appeal, with a ruling against them potentially carrying serious sporting and financial consequences.
