Tottenham Hotspur recorded their first Premier League victory of the 2026/27 campaign after defeating Coventry City 3-1 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on Monday night, October 19, 2026.

James Maddison, Omar Marmoush and Ben Davies scored for Spurs, while Jack Rudoni was on target for Coventry in a match that also marked Dejan Kulusevski’s return from a lengthy injury lay-off.

Tottenham had failed to win any of their opening six league matches, leaving them at the bottom of the standings before Monday’s encounter. However, the victory offered Roberto De Zerbi’s side renewed hope following a difficult start to the season.

Maddison opened the scoring in the 14th minute with an impressive finish into the top corner. The midfielder was making his first competitive start for Tottenham since May 2025 and marked the occasion against his former club in style.

His goal came as Spurs sought to improve their attacking play after struggling to find consistency in their opening fixtures. Maddison’s movement and passing helped create better connections between the team’s attacking players.

Tottenham appeared to be heading towards half-time with the advantage, and Dominic Solanke briefly thought he had doubled their lead when he converted Andy Robertson’s cross in the 18th minute. However, the effort was ruled out for offside.

Coventry returned from the break with renewed determination and restored parity four minutes into the second half. Rudoni broke into the Tottenham penalty area before finding the net in the 49th minute, putting the hosts under pressure once again.

Spurs responded nine minutes later when Marmoush restored their lead. The forward found the far corner with a well-placed strike in the 58th minute, registering his first goal for the club and putting Tottenham back in control.

The home supporters had another reason to celebrate late in the match when Kulusevski entered the pitch in the 86th minute. The Swedish winger had been sidelined for 526 days because of a knee injury, making his return one of the evening’s most significant moments.

Davies then sealed the three points deep into stoppage time, scoring in the 96th minute with an unexpected finish using the outside of his boot.

The result lifted Tottenham to 16th place with six points, level with Coventry but ahead on goal difference. Spurs will now look to maintain their momentum when they face London rivals Chelsea at Stamford Bridge.

Maddison’s performance was a major highlight as Tottenham finally found a player capable of bringing greater creativity to their attacking play.

The midfielder scored the opening goal and consistently looked for opportunities to create chances for his teammates, including Solanke. His ability to operate between the lines and deliver dangerous passes gave Spurs a more organised attacking structure.

Carragher praises Maddison’s quality

Former Liverpool defender and Sky Sports pundit Jamie Carragher also highlighted Maddison’s influence, praising the midfielder’s style and technical ability during Monday Night Football.

“James Maddison definitely has more panache than Conor Gallagher in that No 10 position.

“It was a joy to see [his goal]. He is one of the real characters in the game and you don’t want him not around Premier League football.

“That was just a great moment. When you’re a player with an injury like that, there will be a fear: will you ever come back or will you be the same player?

“There is still a long way to go, but he still has a bit of magic in his boots!”

For Tottenham, the victory provides an opportunity to rebuild confidence after their disappointing opening six matches. Maddison’s return to the starting line-up, Marmoush’s maiden goal and Kulusevski’s comeback will offer encouragement as De Zerbi prepares his team for their next league assignment against Chelsea.
