Kisumu County Woman Representative Ruth Odinga has publicly differed with her elder brother, Siaya Senator Oburu Odinga, over remarks suggesting that ODM leader Raila Odinga may not contest the presidency in the 2027 General Election.
Speaking during a public event on Tuesday, Ruth Odinga insisted that the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) constitution is clear on the party’s presidential nomination process, arguing that the party leader automatically becomes the presidential candidate unless members decide otherwise through the proper party structures.
Her remarks appeared to contradict sentiments expressed earlier by Oburu Odinga, who, while speaking during an event at State House, indicated that Raila Odinga had effectively stepped aside from the 2027 presidential race and would instead support President William Ruto’s re-election bid.
Ruth maintained that such a significant political decision cannot be made unilaterally without consulting party members and following the laid-down procedures within ODM. She emphasised that the party’s constitution remains binding and that any move to endorse another candidate must first be approved through official party organs.
“The presidential candidate must be the party leader of that party, and therefore we cannot be talking about someone else. I am not afraid to say this because the truth must be said. Let us sit down, convene a National Delegates Convention (NDC), and amend the constitution if we want to allow anybody else to become the party’s presidential candidate,” Ruth said.
She further noted that ODM members have a responsibility to safeguard the party’s democratic processes and ensure that major decisions are made transparently and with the involvement of stakeholders across the country.
Ruth’s remarks came just hours after Oburu’s comments at State House, highlighting what appears to be growing differences within sections of the Odinga family and ODM supporters regarding the party’s political direction ahead of the 2027 elections.
The contrasting statements are likely to fuel debate within ODM as supporters seek clarity on Raila Odinga’s future political plans and the party’s strategy for the next General Election.
