KURA announces two-month closure of Quarry Road from October 1

KURA has announced a two-month closure of Quarry Road (Mlolongo-Kamulu) from October 1 to December 1, 2026, to allow for major construction works

The Kenya Urban Roads Authority (KURA) has announced a temporary closure of the Mlolongo-Kamulu, commonly known as Quarry Road, from Thursday, October 1, 2026, to Tuesday, December 1, 2026, to facilitate essential construction works.

The closure is expected to affect motorists using the road between Mlolongo, Kamulu and surrounding areas, with KURA advising drivers to use designated alternative routes during the two-month traffic disruption.

Alternative routes announced

According to the public notice issued by KURA, motorists will be diverted through different routes depending on the type of vehicle.

Syokimau-Katani Road and Syokimau-Parliament Road will be used by light to medium vehicles, while Tuffoam Road has been designated for heavy commercial vehicles.

KURA said the diversions are intended to facilitate traffic movement while construction works are undertaken along the affected section of Quarry Road.

The authority urged motorists to plan their journeys and comply with traffic management measures at the site.

Police, marshals to manage traffic

KURA said police officers and traffic marshals will be stationed at the affected section to help manage traffic and guide motorists through the designated diversions.

“Motorists are advised to exercise caution when approaching the affected section and to follow all traffic signs and instructions given by police officers and traffic marshals,” the authority said.

The notice comes as road construction and rehabilitation projects continue across Nairobi and its metropolitan area, where traffic disruptions can affect commuting times and freight movement.

KURA has asked drivers to remain alert while approaching the closure and to follow instructions issued on the ground.

Heavy trucks directed to Tuffoam

Heavy commercial vehicles have been specifically directed to use Tuffoam Road, according to the traffic management plan released by the authority.

The distinction between vehicle categories is intended to help manage traffic volumes and reduce congestion on routes designated for smaller vehicles during the construction period.

The authority’s notice also includes a traffic diversion map showing the closed section, alternative routes and directions for light and heavy vehicles.

KURA appeals for cooperation

KURA said the temporary closure is necessary to allow the contractor to undertake construction works along the affected section.

The authority acknowledged that the disruption could inconvenience road users but said the works form part of efforts to improve urban transport infrastructure.

“KURA regrets any inconvenience this may cause and thanks the public for their cooperation as we continue working to transform urban mobility,” the notice said.

Motorists travelling through the Mlolongo-Kamulu corridor from October 1 to December 1, 2026, are therefore advised to allow additional travel time, observe road signs and follow directions from traffic officers and marshals.
