Kasarani MP Ronald Karauri has dismissed claims that motorists were robbed by goons along the Nairobi Expressway, saying he was the person inside the white car captured in a viral video and that the men surrounding the vehicle had stopped to assist him.
In a statement on Friday, September 4, 2026, Karauri said the incident, which sparked concern among motorists after the video circulated widely on social media, was misconstrued as a robbery.
“I’ve just seen a video trending on social media about goons robbing motorists on the expressway. I just want to clarify that I’m actually the one who was on the expressway in the white car,” Karauri said.
The MP said he was seated on the passenger side of the vehicle when he encountered a problem with one of the doors, forcing him to stop on the expressway.
“I was coming from a meeting with fellow Nairobians, and my door could not close. Apparently, in that particular car, as long as you’re moving, you cannot lock the doors, so I was in a bit of distress,” he said.
Who were the people seen in the clip?
According to Karauri, the people captured surrounding the vehicle were not criminals but individuals he had been with who came to his assistance after noticing that he had stopped.
“I had to actually stop right there on the expressway, and when they saw me stop, they came to help me. So, we managed to close the door, and we proceeded on,” he explained.
The MP urged members of the public to disregard the robbery claims, saying the footage had been misinterpreted.
“So, just to clarify, these are not goons. These are normal Nairobi young people. So, I think it’s just a message for everybody to calm down,” he said.
DCI investigates viral footage
Karauri’s clarification comes after the Directorate of Criminal Investigations launched investigations into the video, which was widely shared online as purported evidence of motorists being robbed along the Nairobi Expressway.
The DCI said its detectives had identified and summoned the people appearing in the footage, including the person portrayed as the alleged victim, and recorded their statements.
Preliminary investigations, according to the DCI, established that the incident was not a robbery, contradicting the claims that accompanied the viral video.
“Preliminary investigations, based on the recorded statements, indicate that the incident was not a robbery. The alleged victim has been identified as Hon. Ronald Karauri, Member of Parliament for Kasarani,” DCI stated.
The development is expected to ease concerns among motorists who had expressed fears over their safety while using the expressway following circulation of the footage.
The DCI has urged members of the public to exercise caution when sharing unverified information on social media, particularly where such content could cause unnecessary alarm.
