Football Kenya Federation (FKF) has confirmed that the 2026/2027 SportPesa League season will officially kick off on Saturday, September 19, 2026.
The federation said the decision to begin the new campaign follows a court ruling issued on August 28, 2026, which FKF says it is complying with.
The announcement brings an end to uncertainty over the start of the new season, with clubs now set to turn their attention to preparations for the campaign.
“Football Kenya Federation wishes to confirm that the SportPesa League 2026/2027 season will commence on Saturday, 19th September 2026 in compliance with the recent court ruling issued on 28th August 2026,” FKF said in a statement.
The new season is expected to provide another opportunity for clubs to compete for domestic honours while also battling for promotion, continental qualification and survival, depending on their respective targets.
FKF has also wished all participating clubs well ahead of the opening weekend and called on supporters to turn out in large numbers to back their teams.
“FKF wishes all participating clubs a successful season and calls upon fans across the country to continue supporting their teams as the new campaign gets underway,” the federation added.
With the September 19 date now confirmed, clubs have a clear timeline as they finalise their squads and preparations for the 2026/2027 campaign.
Mvurya intervenes to end FKF Premier League impasse
The developmenet comes shortly after Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya had called on stakeholders in Kenyan football to set aside their differences and work together towards resolving the impasse surrounding the start of the FKF Premier League.
Mvurya made the appeal on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, after holding a consultative meeting with chairpersons of FKF League clubs at Talanta Plaza to deliberate on the challenges delaying the commencement of the new league season.
“I have urged all parties to rise above differences and rhetoric that could further jeopardise the league and instead embrace dialogue, compromise and the collective responsibility we have to safeguard the interests of our players and Kenyan football even as we ready our National Team for the AFCON PAMOJA 2027.” Mvurya stated.
On his part, FKF President Hussein Mohammed said: “The engagement was a courtesy call aimed at forging a unified front on matters of football development and addressing issues affecting Kenyan football. The CS emphasized the need to get the league underway, noting that a running league is critical in preparing our national team for the upcoming AFCON 2027,” he said.
Gor Mahia keen to defend title
Meanwhile, FKF Premier League defending champions Gor Mahia jetted out to Egypt on Friday morning for the return leg of their CAF Champions League fixture against Pyramids FC, scheduled for Sunday, September 13, 2026 in Cairo.
The team departed from Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) aboard a direct flight and landed in the Egyptian capital before 10:00 am.
The travelling contingent comprises 24 players, the technical bench, club officials, a Football Kenya Federation (FKF) representative and the media team.
The return leg comes as Gor Mahia seek to overturn the tie and keep their CAF Champions League campaign alive.
