Kenyan darts player David “Why Not?” Munyua has earned another opportunity to compete at the Professional Darts Corporation (PDC) World Darts Championship after successfully defending his place on the global stage.

Munyua secured qualification in dramatic fashion after narrowly defeating compatriot Evans Njuguna 8–7 in the final of the African Darts Group North African Qualifier held in Nairobi.

The two Kenyans could not be separated after 14 legs, with the score locked at 7–7 before Munyua held his nerve in the decisive 15th leg to complete the victory.

His route to the final had been equally impressive. The Nairobi-based veterinarian began the knockout stages with a commanding 6–0 quarter-final win over Okalany Robert Clegg before eliminating Peter Wanjii 7–5 in the semi-final.

The latest achievement means Munyua will return to London’s Alexandra Palace for a second straight appearance at the PDC World Championship.

His first appearance at the tournament marked a milestone for Kenyan darts, as he became the first player from the country to feature in the prestigious competition.

Munyua immediately attracted attention during his debut when he produced a stunning comeback against 2024 World Grand Prix champion Mike De Decker.

Having gone two sets down, the Kenyan recovered to claim a 3–2 victory, with a remarkable 135 checkout forming one of the highlights of his comeback.

His colourful entrance to the arena, accompanied by the hit song Mwaki, also helped him connect with the crowd at Alexandra Palace.

With qualification now secured, Munyua will once again carry Kenya’s flag to one of the biggest tournaments in professional darts, hoping to build on the impact of his historic debut.

What is PDC?

The PDC World Darts Championship, officially known as the Paddy Power World Darts Championship for sponsorship reasons, is a world championship competition held annually in the sport of darts. The championship begins in December and ends in January and has been held at Alexandra Palace in London since 2008. Organised by the Professional Darts Corporation (PDC), it is the most prestigious of their tournaments, with the winner receiving the Sid Waddell Trophy, named in honour of the darts commentator Sid Waddell. Along with the Premier League Darts and World Matchplay, it is part of the Triple Crown.

The PDC championship began in 1994 as the WDC World Darts Championship as one of the consequences of the split in darts, which saw the World Darts Council break away from the BDO.
