Former Sports Principal Secretary Peter Kirimi Kaberia and nine other individuals are set to face graft-related charges over the alleged misappropriation of Ksh330 million allocated for Kenya’s preparations to host the 2018 Africa Nations Championship (CHAN).
The Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions (ODPP) said it had approved charges against the former senior government official, four former Ministry of Sports officials and five businessmen following investigations by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC).
The charges follow the submission of the EACC investigation file to the ODPP for review and guidance.
“The charges arise from investigations conducted by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC), whose inquiry file was submitted to the ODPP for review and guidance,” the statement read.
In a statement dated September 7, 2026, the ODPP said an independent assessment of the evidence established sufficient grounds to prosecute the suspects and companies linked to the alleged financial misconduct.
Kaberia will be charged alongside former Ministry of Sports officials Stephen Njoroge Muthuma, a Senior Principal Finance Officer; Harun Chebet Komen, Director of Administration; Enock Ondwari Onditi, Principal Accountant; and John Kiende Ruga, Senior Superintendent Engineer.
Also facing prosecution are Auditel Kenya director Marcos Gonzalez Puente, Taxwise Consulting Limited director Samuel Mbaa Njoroge, Restea Enterprises Limited director Kitheka Muema, Lease Pride Limited director Anthony Mwangi Kimanthi and Leasepath Limited director Ephrahim Kinyua Muchangi.
Six companies have also been named in the case: Auditel Kenya, Taxwise Consulting Limited, Restea Enterprises Limited, Lease Pride Limited, Leasepath Limited and Liroma Assurance.
The suspects and companies are expected to face charges including abuse of office, unlawful acquisition of public property, failure to comply with procurement laws, acquisition of proceeds of crime and financial misconduct.
The alleged irregularities relate to Ksh330 million that had been allocated towards preparations for Kenya’s hosting of the 2018 CHAN tournament.
The ODPP said its decision to prosecute was based on its assessment of the evidence gathered by the EACC.
“The DPP has determined that sufficient grounds exist to prosecute the suspects and the companies involved,” the ODPP said.
The prosecution marks the latest move by anti-corruption agencies to pursue alleged financial impropriety involving public funds.
The ODPP said it remained committed to upholding the rule of law, protecting public resources and ensuring accountability in the management of public affairs.
The suspects will now be required to appear in court to answer to the charges. The allegations remain subject to determination by the courts.
