Team Kenya returns home with seven medals from World Athletics Road Running Championships

Kenya returned home from the 2026 World Athletics Road Running Championships in Copenhagen, Denmark, with a seven-medal haul after another strong showing on the global athletics stage.

Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya received the Kenyan contingent at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport on Tuesday morning, September 22, 2026 and congratulated the athletes for their performances at the championships.

Team Kenya’s success in Copenhagen

Kenya collected three gold medals, three silver and one bronze in Copenhagen, with Agnes Jebet Ngetich providing one of the standout performances.

Ngetich won gold in the women’s half marathon in an impressive 1:05:15, a time that set a new women’s-only world record.

The Kenyan team also excelled in the team competitions, claiming gold in both the women’s and men’s half marathon events to underline the country’s strength in road running.

Mvurya also highlighted the individual performances that contributed to Kenya’s overall medal tally.

Veronica Loleo, Nicholas Kipkorir and Caroline Makandi Gitonga each secured silver medals, while Miriam Cherop added a bronze in the women’s one-mile race.

The Sports CS said the athletes’ achievements had once again demonstrated Kenya’s ability to compete at the highest level of international athletics.

“Congratulations to Team Kenya for an outstanding performance at the 2026 World Athletics Road Running Championships in Copenhagen, Denmark, bringing home an impressive seven medals — 3 Gold, 3 Silver and 1 Bronze,” Mvurya said.

He singled out Ngetich’s performance for special praise, describing her display as spectacular after she combined the world title with a new world record.

Mvurya said he was pleased to welcome the athletes back to the country and celebrate their achievements with them.

“I received our champions at JKIA as they returned home this morning, celebrating with them the remarkable achievements that have once again placed Kenya at the pinnacle of global athletics,” he said.

The Copenhagen results add to Kenya’s long list of successes in international distance running, with the latest generation of athletes continuing to make their mark across individual and team events.
