Mikel Arteta has cautioned his Arsenal stars as the Premier League defending champions prepare to take on Sunderland at the Stadium of Light on Saturday, September 12, 2026.
The Gunners’ boss gave a team news update on Friday, September 11, 2026, reflecting on Arsenal’s draw at Sunderland last season and much more during the press conference at the Sobha Realty Training Centre.
“We have to focus on the next match. We experienced last season how tough it’s going to be tomorrow night. It’s an unbelievable atmosphere, and it’s great to play in these kinds of games. We know how ready they’re going to be, we have prepared the game, we’re going to finalise the game today. We know the importance of it and we’ll be ready tomorrow to be on that pitch. We’ll compete like we always do, we’ll try to be better than the opponent and win the game.” Arteta said.
On Arsenal’s previous record against Sunderland in the Premier League, Arteta said:
“Last year, we dropped points there, especially in the last minutes. We experienced and learned a lot from that game. Tomorrow, again, we’ll discuss many things that we need to be aware of and where we want to take the game, what their qualities are and how we’ll try to nullify them.”
Arteta on Havert’s best position
Mikel Arteta has also commented on Kai Havert’s position as the German international continues to inspire the Gunners.
“The best position is in relation to what the game demands and what the team demands on the day – to be as efficient and unpredictable as possible. Kai is extremely intelligent – that’s his biggest quality. He understands the game – he’s five, 10 seconds ahead. He knows what’s happening, he doesn’t need to think about it – he just acts, and it makes the people around him better which is another massive quality. On top of that, he’s scoring goals, producing chances. He’s outstanding, and he’s in a great emotional state at the moment.” He said.
Gabriel enjoying new season
Meanwhile, defender Gabriel has enjoyed Arsenal’s start to the 2026/27 season, playing every minute as the Gunners have made it five wins from five in all competitions, conceding just one goal along the way.
The Brazilian defender played 49 games last season as Arsenal won the Premier League title and reached both the Champions League and Carabao Cup finals. After an impressive campaign last time around, Big Gabi feels Arsenal can do even better this season.
“We want more,” Gabi said, “we want to win as many major trophies as possible.
“I think we have to have that pressure on us because we want it.
“The way we believe in each other and the way we communicate on the pitch and off the pitch makes it a real pleasure to be here every single day with them.” He said.
Arteta and his Arsenal side will be seeking to make it four wins in four Premier League outings this season against the Black Cats at the Stadium of Light.
