Police have recovered a pistol after a suspected armed robber was shot dead during a confrontation with officers in Dandora, Nairobi County.
The incident happened on Friday, September 11, 2026, along Councillor Opundo Road after police officers from Dandora Police Station responded to reports of a gang of armed men terrorising members of the public.
According to the National Police Service, officers encountered three suspects during the operation, prompting the men to draw firearms and open fire at the police.
“Police officers from Dandora Police Station yesterday responded to a robbery incident along Councillor Opundo Road in Nairobi, following reports from members of the public that several armed men were robbing people in the area,” NPS stated in an X post on Saturday, September 12, 2026.
The officers returned fire, fatally injuring one of the suspects.
The other two persons of interest managed to escape and fled towards the railway line as police pursued them.
Items recovered
A pistol was recovered at the scene together with three mobile phones and an identification card believed to be connected to the suspects.
Police have since launched a manhunt for the two suspects who escaped, with investigations underway to establish their identities and determine whether they are linked to other robbery incidents reported in the area.
The incident comes amid intensified police operations targeting armed gangs and other criminal networks in Nairobi, particularly in areas where residents have raised concerns over robberies and insecurity.
“One of the suspects sustained a fatal gunshot wound, while the other two fled towards the railway line. A pistol was recovered at the scene, alongside three mobile phones and an ID card,” NPS stated.
The National Police Service urged residents to remain vigilant and promptly report suspicious activities to security agencies.
