Petroleum tanker explodes along Eldoret-Webuye road, mass casualty incident reported

A mass casualty incident has been reported along the Eldoret-Webuye road following a petroleum tanker explosion near Paul Boit Secondary School.

The Kenya Red Cross Society said its emergency response teams are on the ground alongside Kenya Police and firefighters as efforts to respond to the incident get underway.

In a statement on Thursday, September 17, 2026, the Red Cross urged motorists to avoid the affected section of the road to allow emergency teams to access the scene and carry out rescue and response operations without obstruction.

“A mass casualty incident has occurred along the Eldoret-Webuye road near Paul Boit Secondary School, following a petroleum tanker explosion,” Kenya Red Cross said.

The organisation added:“Kenya Red Cross is on the ground responding in collaboration with Kenya Police and firefighters.”

Authorities had not immediately released details on the number of casualties or the circumstances surrounding the explosion.

The Red Cross urged motorists to avoid the area as emergency responders continue operations.

“We urge motorists to avoid the area to allow emergency response teams unhindered access,” the organisation said.
