The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has launched an investigation into the death of Dennis Aremo Osiemo while in police custody at Narumoru Police Station in Kieni East Sub-County, Nyeri County.
Osiemo died on Sunday, September 20, 2026, prompting IPOA to dispatch investigators to the police station to establish the circumstances surrounding his death.
“The Independent Policing Oversight Authority (IPOA) has commenced investigations into the death in custody of Dennis Aremo Osiemo,” the authority said in a statement issued on Thursday, September 24, 2026.
Osiemo’s body moved to mortuary
Following the incident, IPOA said its team visited Narumoru Police Station as part of the investigation process.
The body was later removed from the station and taken to Narumoru Level 4 Hospital Mortuary, where it is awaiting a post-mortem examination.
IPOA said the post-mortem will be conducted in the presence of its investigations team and members of Osiemo’s family.
The examination is expected to form part of the ongoing efforts to establish the circumstances surrounding his death. IPOA has not released findings on the cause of death.
When was Dennis Aremo Osiemo arrested?
IPOA said Osiemo had been arrested two days before his death.
According to the oversight authority, officers from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), with assistance from Keroka Police Station in Nyamira County, arrested Osiemo on Friday, September 18.
He was arrested “in connection to an assault case,” IPOA said.
The authority did not provide further details about the assault case or the specific circumstances of Osiemo’s arrest in the statement.
His death at Narumoru Police Station on September 20 is now the subject of IPOA’s investigation.
IPOA promises impartial probe
IPOA said it is continuing with other necessary processes as part of its investigation and in accordance with its mandate.
The authority also acknowledged public concern over the death and pledged to investigate the matter.
“The Authority acknowledges the public concern over the incident and reaffirms its commitment to investigating the matter promptly, conclusively and impartially,” IPOA said.
The authority said its investigation is aimed at establishing “the full circumstances surrounding the death of Dennis Aremo Osiemo.”
IPOA has not announced any conclusions or attributed responsibility for the death.
IPOA to issue update after investigation
The oversight authority said it will provide further information once the investigation is complete.
“Upon completion of the investigation, IPOA will give appropriate updates,” it said.
IPOA also sent its condolences to Osiemo’s family and assured them that the matter is receiving attention.
“IPOA conveys condolences to the family of the deceased and assures them that the matter is receiving the attention it so deserves,” the authority said.
The investigation comes as IPOA seeks to establish what happened to Osiemo between his arrest in Nyamira County on September 18 and his death in police custody at Narumoru Police Station two days later.
