Kenya Maritime Authority warns of rough seas, strong winds

Kenya Maritime Authority warns coastal residents and boat operators of approaching rough seas

The Kenya Maritime Authority (KMA) has warned of strong winds, rough seas, high waves and heavy rainfall expected along the Kenyan coast between September and December 2026, urging fishermen, boat operators and other sea users to take precautions.

The authority said the anticipated conditions could pose a risk to vessels and people undertaking activities at sea and along the coastline, particularly when visibility is reduced.

“The conditions may include strong winds, rough seas, high waves, heavy rainfall and reduced visibility which pose a risk to vessels and persons undertaking activities at sea and along the coastline,” KMA said in a public notice issued on September 21.

KMA advised members of the public to avoid venturing into the sea during periods of adverse weather and rough sea conditions.

Fisherfolk and other stakeholders whose activities depend on the sea have also been urged to exercise extreme caution and postpone non-essential activities when conditions deteriorate.

“Fisherfolk and other stakeholders should exercise extreme caution and postpone non-essential activities at sea when conditions deteriorate,” the authority said.

Boat owners and operators have been advised to properly secure their vessels while underway, moored or at anchor. Passengers and crew have also been urged to wear life jackets whenever they are on board vessels.

The authority further cautioned vessels already at sea to monitor weather updates and move to safe shelter if conditions become unsafe.

“Vessels already at sea should monitor weather updates and proceed to safe shelter where necessary,” KMA said.

The warning also covers communities living along the coastline, who have been asked to remain alert to strong winds, high waves and heavy rainfall and follow instructions from relevant authorities.

KMA urged the public to continuously monitor official weather and maritime safety information issued by the Kenya Meteorological Department (KMD) and the maritime authority.

The authority also reminded sea users and coastal communities to report maritime incidents and emergencies to the Regional Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (RMRCC).

The warning comes as the authority prepares sea users for potentially hazardous conditions over the four-month period, with the focus on preventing accidents and protecting lives along the Kenyan coast.
