The Kenya Airports Authority (KAA) has clarified its role in the recovery of personal belongings left onboard aircraft following a viral video showing a passenger attempting to retrieve a mobile phone at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA).
The video, which circulated widely on social media, prompted public discussion over how passengers are assisted when they leave valuables on an aircraft after landing.
In a statement issued on September 15, 2026, KAA said it sympathised with the passenger but clarified that the interaction shown in the video involved airline personnel and not KAA staff.
“We sympathise with the passenger and appreciate the frustration and inconvenience that can arise when personal belongings are misplaced during travel,” the authority said.
KAA separates its role from airline operations
KAA said that while the specific interaction involved airline personnel, passengers generally experience their journey through the airport as a single process involving multiple service providers.
The authority said it was therefore working with airlines and other aviation stakeholders to ensure that matters involving passengers are handled professionally and with appropriate attention to customer service.
“KAA recognises that passengers experience the airport as one journey and, together with our aviation partners, we remain committed to ensuring that such interactions are handled professionally and with due consideration to the customer experience,” KAA said.
The clarification is significant because the airport authority and individual airlines have different operational responsibilities when it comes to passenger services and property left onboard aircraft.
Why passengers may face verification checks
KAA also sought to explain the procedures that apply when recovered belongings are handed back to passengers.
According to the authority, individuals seeking to reclaim lost property may be required to provide identification and complete relevant documentation before an item is released.
“These procedures are intended to ensure that recovered property is handed over to its rightful owner,” KAA said.
Such verification is intended to protect recovered property from theft or wrongful claims and to ensure that belongings are released only to the person who can establish ownership.
KAA engages airline over incident
KAA said it has engaged the airline involved in the incident and is working with relevant aviation stakeholders to improve passenger awareness of procedures for reporting and recovering lost property.
The authority urged passengers who misplace belongings during travel to seek assistance from the relevant airline or airport customer service teams and to cooperate with verification requirements when recovering an item.
“We encourage passengers to cooperate with the applicable verification procedures and to seek assistance from airline or airport customer service teams whenever clarification is required,” KAA said.
The authority reaffirmed that it would continue working with airport stakeholders to improve passenger services while maintaining security requirements.
“KAA remains committed to working with all airport stakeholders to provide a safe, secure and customer focused travel experience.”
The viral incident has also highlighted the importance of clear communication between passengers, airlines and airport authorities when personal belongings are left behind during air travel.
